Surface Classifications

The GIA system specifies four surface quality classifications:

Clean—Pearls can be blemish-free or contain minute surface characteristics that are difficult for a trained observer to see. Pearls that are completely blemish-free are often called “spotless.”

Lightly spotted—Pearls show minor surface irregularities when inspected by a trained observer.

Moderately spotted—Pearls show noticeable surface characteristics. A few might be quite noticeable.

Heavily spotted—Pearls show obvious surface irregularities. Durability might be affected.
