Aspects of the Diamond Industry

  • How do mining costs relate to the price of diamonds?
  • How can brand names help promote diamonds to the public?
  • How do manmade diamonds and diamond simulants fit into the industry?
  • What's the role of government regulation in the diamond industry?

As you make your way through the assignments to come, you'll gain the basic information you need to sell diamonds effectively. But it's important to remember that the diamond industry is more than just sparkling gems in a display case.

Before they get to that display case, diamonds must first be found, then taken from the ground. This is taking place in remote, mostly inhospitable locations all over the world. At the other end of the market, manufacturers promote branded lines of jewelry styles, special diamond cuts, and diamonds labeled with specific source names.

Manmade diamonds and diamond look-alikes have existed almost as long as there has been demand for natural diamonds. Their presence is one reason that government regulations play such an important role in maintaining order and integrity in the industry. In the US, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) establishes and oversees those regulations.

These are just a few of the many facets of the diamond industry. If you go on to take the Diamonds and Diamond Grading course, you'll get a lot more in-depth information about all of these subjects.
